Albemarle County Considers Ranked Choice

First use could be 2025 elections for County Supervisor.

Following Charlottesville's successful City Council meeting, the Albemarle County Board held a lengthy discussion on ranked choice this Wednesday.

The case for ranked choice voting is a little less clear in Albemarle. Unlike Charlottesville City, Albemarle has rarely seen more than two candidates run for each open Board seat. Indeed, in recent years, some seats have had only one. Since ranked-choice elections require three or more candidates, there may be less pressing need for RCV in Albemarle, and the County has to weigh the costs of purchasing RCV tools that may go underused.

Wednesday's meeting was an early discussion, and all six supervisors showed keen interest, so we thank them for investing in exploring RCV. Special thanks are also due to our County supporters who came out to testify. They carried the torch for more than 130 County residents who have signed on to the petition supporting RCV in Albemarle.

Keep an eye out for more news in the days ahead. Charlottesville City Council meets September 3 for their final vote on the City's RCV ordinance.
