Democrat JD Spain won the County Board race with 58% of first-choice votes. Republican Juan Carlos Fierro came in second with 15%, ahead of independent candidates Madison Granger (13%) and Audrey Clement (12%). Because Spain earned more than half the first-choice votes, he won the race in just one round. With RCV, winners have to earn broad support to serve, and JD Spain did just that. We thank all the candidates for a spirited and issue-focused race and wish incoming Board Member Spain well in his service ahead.
More than 70% of District voters approved a ballot measure that will bring ranked choice to their elections starting in 2026. DC is joining Maine and Alaska, which have used ranked choice for federal elections, and more than 50 cities nationwide that use RCV locally, too.
At the national level, Americans remain deeply divided across different visions for the country, and the path to consensus will require making space for more choices and coalitions to emerge. We thank you for being with us in that work here in Virginia.
