Loudoun County Board Schedules Ranked Choice Voting Briefing

Report from the Office of Elections slated for February 19 Board meeting.

Leesburg, VA — The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to request a comprehensive presentation on ranked choice voting at their February 19 meeting. The Office of Elections and Voter Registration will discuss the potential implementation of ranked choice voting, including technical requirements and lessons learned from other Virginia communities.

The Board's request comes as more Virginia localities consider adopting ranked choice voting for local elections. Arlington County has used ranked choice in County Board elections since 2023, and Charlottesville will use ranked choice for the first time to elects it City Council this year. Several other Virginia communities, including Albemarle County and the cities of Falls Church and Newport News, are also considering adoption.

Under current law, Virginia counties can only use ranked choice to elect their Boards of Supervisors, though legislators in Richmond are now considering a bill that would expand that authority to include all local offices.

The Board meets at 4:00 PM in the Loudoun County Government Center. The meeting is open to the public, and residents may sign up to speak during public comment sessions at 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Additional questions can be directed to Christi Maple, Chief Legislative Aide to Supervisor Saines, at christi.maple@loudoun.gov.
