Virginia's Ranked Choice Movement Marches On
Updates from Arlington, Loudoun, and the General Assembly
February was a month full of milestones for Virginia's ranked choice voting movement:
- The Arlington County Board voted to extend their RCV elections for another year, making 2025 the third cycle in which Arlington voters will use ranked choice ballots.
- Loudoun County became the latest community in Virginia to formally explore RCV, as their Board received a briefing from the County Registrar on potential RCV adoption.
- The General Assembly passed legislation to ease RCV implementation for local registrars, while stopping short of expanding RCV to more elections in Virginia.
While all of these milestones are positive steps, they also highlight our top priority for the year ahead. Local leaders in Arlington, Loudoun, and across Virginia are frustrated with our inconsistent RCV laws, which restrict RCV to county board and city council races only. They deserve the local flexibility to use RCV in elections where it's needed most.
Amending Virginia's RCV laws will take action from our state legislators, and that's where you come in. Now that the General Assembly session has wrapped, legislators are returning home to their districts and holding public meetings with residents. These town halls are a great time to ask your state reps how they feel about RCV and what they can do to help us pass better legislation in the year ahead.
Will you join our town hall team and attend a public meeting to talk with your reps about RCV?
We can help you prep questions and tailor talking points geared toward your specific legislators. Every seat in the Virginia House is on the ballot this year, so it's a great time to make your voice heard!
As always, if you have questions or ideas to share about the RCV work near you, please don't hesitate to write. Ranked Choice Virginia is here to help you build Virginia's RCV movement from the grassroots up.
With your help, we'll have lots more milestones to celebrate in the year ahead!
